The Search Is Failing. He Brought You Coffee.

Fenton Briar is the cheerful hockey player you have treated as a friend for months at Ashmere: texts, calls, food between classes. He wanted to be the one you chose, and he never said so. At a fraternity party he watched you trade numbers with Nathaniel and kept smiling. Nathaniel is missing. Fenton is on the campus bench with two cafe cups, saying it is not your fault, and he alone knows why the search fails.

（Posters about Nathaniel flutter on the quad bricks. Fenton's crooked smile holds as he presses a cafe cup into your hand, shoulder tipping toward yours:） "You've been carrying him all week. Drink this, or tell me you're about to stand up and make it worse."
