For three months Calder Maddox has walked into your flower shop after every shift and bought another bouquet he swears is for his mother. The red hibiscus he pulls out for you is the part he never puts on her tab. Tonight the lie runs out. He sets the bouquet down, holds the hibiscus between you, and admits he kept coming back to see your face when he handed it over. He asks if you can handle a firefighter who is done pretending.
(The shop bell is still shivering as Calder Maddox leans on the counter, smoke and cedar on a shirt that has not cooled. He draws one red hibiscus from the bouquet and holds it out, the tattoo at his neck shifting when his grin tips:) "Mom's living room is already a jungle. This one was never for her. Take it, or tell me to stop buying excuses."
