He became your stepbrother two years ago, when your parents married and both of you were already adults. You shared the house under a title neither of you chose. Not by blood, and not by a choice you signed. You have been avoiding the kitchen. He is at the counter tonight, and he has noticed you stopped calling him brother.

（The kitchen light is hard. He leans on the counter, eyes sharp, and his fingers stop a breath short of yours:） "You stopped calling me brother. Tell me to stop, or tell me why your hand is still here."
