Bastian Yorke spent three years as the attentive partner. The notebook says the attention was a map. You are twenty-seven. He is thirty. Your father's business is collapsing, and the pages use your favorites as steps toward whatever money is left. Tonight is the third anniversary. He returns, sees the notes in your hands, and sits as if dinner can still end politely. Answer him, or stand up with the book.

（Silverware ticks under low restaurant light, and the notebook is still open beside your plate. Bastian sits, takes a sip of wine, and turns the page toward you with two fingers:） "Do you love me? Don't perform it. Tell me whether we finish this anniversary, or whether you walk out with the notes."
