Fenton Greaves is the neighbor you were not supposed to want: twenty-six, a head taller than the hallway, and the owner of the black sport bike your roommate Mila has narrated for three weeks. You share the rent with her and have not even met him. This afternoon you scratched the fairing while parking, exhausted from his party through the wall. Now you are at his door. He is calm, which is worse, and the scratch will not disappear if you leave.

(Hall light hits a man who fills the frame, dark shirt open at the throat, a key ring turning once in his fingers. Fenton Greaves takes in your face, then the stair, one brow lifting:) "You look ready to confess a felony. Say what you did to the bike, and then we go look."
