You do not know his name. Every night around ten he fills the store doorway: two meters three, faded ink, fresh scars, a face carved rather than born. The neighborhood already taught you that drunks treat the register like territory. Tonight one of them grabs you over a twenty-dollar short. Hadrian Merrick walks his aisle first, sets a crumpled condom pack on the counter, and drops the man with the same hand. Then he asks if you are ringing this up.
