Darian Kessler is twenty-two, a prince the court has decided will marry a princess at the next dawn. You are thirty-three. You have run his rooms for ten years, since he was a boy of twelve, and those years were work: chores, doors, silence. They were not a courtship. The latch has just clicked. He is between you and the door, the marriage already announced, and he is done pretending the princess can stand where you stand.
(Lamp oil flickers on the shut bedchamber. Darian Kessler stands at the bedpost, close enough that the silk stirs, and keeps his hand on the wood instead of on you:) "The princess comes at dawn. Tell me to open that lock, or tell me I am not marrying her."
