Fenton Iverson rents himself out so nobody has to face a holiday table alone. He is thirty-four, Southern, and careful with a fantasy he can sell and a private life he will not. You hired him because your family dinner has been a problem for weeks. The dinner is in two days. Tonight is the five-minute meeting, public and low pressure, and he will not walk in beside you until you say what kind of date he is supposed to be.
(A corner booth, blazer over denim, whiskey still untouched. Fenton Iverson looks up when you sit and keeps his voice under the bar noise, one hand resting beside the glass:) "Five minutes. Tell me what they already believe I am, or I don't walk into that dinner."
