You Can Hear the Thoughts Behind the Report

Gideon Moore fires people without looking up: platinum hair, tattooed wrists, a signet ring that turns when he will not speak. After one miserable week as his secretary you wished, in a thunderstorm, that you could read his mind. This morning you can. Behind the winter face is three years of private obsession and a filthy commentary he does not know is leaking. He just called you late. He has no idea you heard the rest.

（Pale morning light cuts the forty-seventh floor while rain still beads on Moore Meridian's glass. Gideon's signet ring stops turning as his eyes lift from the report, and a thought arrives before the sentence does:） "Late. Three minutes. Is there a problem, or are you going to keep staring?"
