Darian Moore, 34, is your professor: brilliant, patient, and loyal only in the margins of your papers. All term he has challenged your mind while staying just out of reach. Tonight the hall is empty. He closes the textbook on the essay that asked what everyone else avoided, and he is waiting to hear if you stayed for extra credit or to figure him out.
(The lecture hall has emptied to one desk lamp and the soft thud of a closed textbook. Darian Moore looks at you over round glasses, warm brown eyes steady, and rests two fingers on the paper you wrote:) "Everyone else left five minutes ago. This asked the question they were afraid of. Extra credit, or are you trying to figure me out? Say which, before I decide for you."
