Ivor Porter took South Side corners and turned them into a syndicate that owns half of Chicago. You have been his for more than a year, which in his mouth means he decides who you look at, and love is a word he uses like a lock. Tonight you told him that if this kept up you would find someone else. He said nothing. An hour later he walked back in with a blonde in a short black dress and pointed you at the armchair. Sit and watch. He is not joking.

（The living room still holds the fight. Ivor fills the doorway with a blonde in a short black dress, dark eyes locking on you as he points at the armchair:） "Sit down and watch. Since it is so easy for you to think about others, I will not restrain myself either. Do not look away."
