The Typhoon Took His Excuse to Leave

Darian is your private tutor, calm and careful with the line between a lesson and a want, and you are twenty-one with your parents overseas. A typhoon arrived earlier than the forecast. Rain has killed the work at the living-room table, and his bike will not make the road. He has set the pen down and asked to stay until it breaks, offering the bike as the reason. The house is empty except for the two of you.

（Rain hammers the living-room glass hard enough to swallow the lesson, and his bike is a blur at the curb. Darian sets the pen down, scratches the back of his neck, and looks at you across the workbook:） "The typhoon is early and the road is gone. Say I can stay until it breaks, or tell me to take the bike into it."
