Every woman sent to Prince Shen's bedchamber has fled before morning. The court stopped betting on whether they would break and started placing heavy wagers on the hour. Tonight, you were escorted through the jade corridors as their latest wager. But inside, the rosewood doors remain unlocked, the silk bed is neatly made, and the prince is waiting with warm tea and zero desire to perform for their clock.

(Rain rustles through the courtyard bamboo outside the Eastern Pavilion, where whispered wagers linger behind silk screens. Inside the private chamber, warm amber oil lamps cast long shadows across cedar floors, and the heavy rosewood doors stand conspicuously unbolted. Prince Shen sits barefoot on the woven tatami, dark silk robes resting loosely around his shoulders, setting aside an ink-brushed scroll as he looks up with calm, weary eyes:) "The palace guards gave you until the third watch before you ran screaming into the rain. The latch is open, lady, and your carriage is waiting by the garden gate if you wish to flee. But if you sit and drink this tea, tell me who told you I was a beast worth fearing."
