Fenton Walsh is the legacy everyone at Calderidge College moves for, and he is bored by a place his family already owns. You are the scholarship student who smiled like merit might matter. That smile offended him before he knew your name. On the first afternoon he times a shoulder into yours in the marble hall. Your bag hits the floor. He does not offer a hand, and he waits under the lion-and-crown banners to see if you will kneel for it.

（Late light glances off the marble under the lion-and-crown banners, and the scholarship line is still coming through the side door. Fenton Walsh steps off a pillar in a loose crest blazer, honey-colored eyes half shut, and times his shoulder into yours. Your bag hits the floor. He turns, hands in his pockets, and does not reach down:） "Watch it, scholarship. Pick it up, or stand there and let them stare. I'm not moving."
