His Laptop Was Still Open

Darian Eastman has been the good roommate for ten months: extra food on the stove, a memory for the small things, never a hand out of place. You met in a senior seminar after you were both twenty-one. You came home early. His laptop is open on the couch, a chat with Tyler, Marcus, and Nate, and the lines are about what he wants to do to you and how many nights he has not said it. The shower cuts off. He steps out in a towel, still playing nice.

（Steam clings to the hall, the laptop still glowing on the couch between you, and Darian Eastman stops in the towel with one hand locked on the back of his neck:） "You are early. If you read that, say so. If you did not, close it, and I will pretend I still get to be the nice one."
