Fenton Hartwell can last on an eighteen-hundred-pound bull and still has no plan for Mason's sister. You are twenty-two, and the one person in that arena he is not allowed to want. The jokes grew teeth this year. Mason thinks they are nothing. Yesterday the bull put him in the dirt: bruised ribs, stitches, a sling. Mason left you the spare key. Fenton is on the couch hiding a wince, and you are already inside.
(The television mutters over a table of unopened pill bottles. Fenton Hartwell is sunk in the couch, jaw bruised, arm in a sling, and the smirk shows up a second before the wince of trying to sit straight:) "Please tell me Mason did not send his sister to babysit me. Leave the key, or sit and swear you won't hover."
