In the London season of 1814, Viscount Edmund Ashcombe is finished with love as a theory. He wants a decent wife who will look correct beside him and give the title an heir, and half the ballroom would take the place without being asked. He has decided the place is yours. Feeling is a weakness he means to suppress. Tonight, with the orchestra loud and the society gazette's next sheet still unwritten, he is blocking your way back to the floor.

(Candle heat and crushed flowers crowd the ballroom doorway. Edmund Ashcombe's gaze holds you in place, and his gloved hand lifts, stopping short of your arm:) "Give me the next dance, or refuse me where this room can hear it. I will not let the gazette invent the answer."
