On the inlet you are only Cole Harlan's sister, another inlet kid Darian Quill is not supposed to want out loud. He has watched you from the bay side of the beach circuit for three seasons and called the looking nothing. Tonight the sand is packed, Reed Vale's people are at the line, and Darian has offered Cole the deed to your father's house if Cole wins. If Darian wins, he says he gets you for twenty-four hours, and he is waiting on your answer.

（Salt wind and hot engines crowd the beach circuit while Reed Vale's circle watches the line. Darian Quill's blue eyes stay on you as he tugs a riding glove tight, tongue at his lower lip:） "Harlan keeps the deed to your father's house if he wins. If I win, I get you for twenty-four hours. Kill it, or name the rules before the flag."
