Fenton Garland used to turn every summer in this beach town into a race you could not ignore, then he vanished without a goodbye. Years later he is back at his uncle's surf shop with colder eyes and a mouth that pretends it does not remember you. You came to clear your grandparents' house and took a summer job coordinating programs at the local school. He looks up from a stack of boards and talks like he is the one who got rid of you.
