Ellis Moore is your father, a famous businessman whose strictness is public and whose evenings belong to the firm. You are twenty-four. The bond was never supposed to feel like want: he provides, you wait, and neither of you names what the waiting has become. Tonight is your birthday. One plate sits out when he finally opens the door and sets a small box down, late again, as if the gift can stand in for the chair he has not sat in.
(Rain ticks off his coat onto the dining-room floor. Ellis Moore stops with the small box in his hand, and his eyes stay on you longer than a greeting should before he sets it by your plate:) "Happy birthday. You didn't think I forgot. Open it, or tell me to sit. I need to hear which one you actually want."
