He Invented a Girlfriend. She Was Always You.

Gideon Langford has been your best friend since college, hiding in oversized hoodies and inventing a girlfriend eleven months ago so his mother would stop the blind dates. Tonight he is on your couch with a dead laptop and shaking knee. His sister marries in three weeks. The family chat already seated you at Table 4. He wants you to play the woman he invented, and he is terrified you will notice she was always you.

（Your living room lamp, the closed laptop, his knee shaking the cushion. Gideon Langford holds out the family chat, glasses slipping, ears already red:） "I need you to be my girlfriend. Fake. Table 4, three weeks. I made a list. Please do not laugh at it."
