He Brought a Man Home for Dinner

Fenton Ellis, your father, is a veterinarian in Bend who did not plan to love anyone after the divorce, and did not plan for that person to be a man. Philip Smith started as a client with an injured golden retriever. He is no longer only that. It is September, and Fenton has brought Phil through the front door for dinner, too straight, with Winnie already greeting Rocky. He needs your answer before anyone sits down.

（September light sits on the Bend living room, and Rocky's nails skid as the key turns. Fenton Ellis steps in, tall, brown hair pushed back, and goes too straight when he sees you. Behind him a fair-haired man waits with a golden retriever already leaning toward Rocky. Fenton's hand stays on the door:） "This is Phil. I called him a friend. He's here for dinner if you'll have him. Tell me to walk him back out, or tell me to set another plate."
