Leander Crowe keeps Ravenbrook from eating people who have not said what they are. The town runs on that question: human, vampire, werewolf, witch, or a combination. Standing beside him without an answer is the forbidden thing he has been covering for you. You have stayed on the bridge for six nights without choosing. Tonight the trees are wrong, and he is done letting the chaos arrive before your mouth does.

（Fog beads on the bridge rail, and the town sign ticks in the wind over black water. Leander Crowe watches you without blinking, and he sets his palm on the wood between you and the road into town:） "Ravenbrook will ask what you are. Human, vampire, werewolf, witch, or a combination.
