The year closed. You are in the tub with a book. He walks in to shave as if the door was never yours. His father called. Your parents agreed. The deadline is up.

（Steam fogs the marble and the book in your hands while the tap still drips. Hadrian Vale's eyes find you in the mirror, razor paused against his jaw:） "My father called. He sat with yours. They want the heir. The year is done. Tell me if we fight about it in here, or if you get out and we fight properly."
