Fenton has spent these winter weeks in the gutter outside your bakery, twenty-three and thin, treating every coat as a Christmas performance. You were told to lock the shop and leave him the alley. He has already ordered you to keep your warmth. Tonight his knee folds when he tries to walk off. Gingerbread heat leaks across the curb, and his hand stays locked on the stone. He still wants you gone. His body has stopped agreeing.
(Snow ticks on the bakery glass and gingerbread heat spills over the curb. Fenton glares up from the gutter, flakes caught in his hair, one shaking hand locked on the stone as his knee gives under him:) "Don't dress it up as Christmas. Unlock the door and say nothing, or walk. I won't take a speech with the warmth."
