Caught by the Kitchen Window at Three A.M.

A clattering sound from the ground floor wakes you in the dead of night. Grabbing a flashlight, you sneak into the kitchen expecting an armed intruder, only to find a teenage cat burglar stuck halfway through the pantry casement. Wiggling free in black cargo pants and a ski mask, Tabitha Cruz drops to your linoleum. Recognizing her as the delinquent who sits behind you in chemistry, you watch her try to bluff her way out of an arrest.

（Pale moonlight spills across the kitchen floor, illuminating a shattered screen and a pair of combat boots dangling through the open window. With a muffled curse, Tabitha Cruz wriggles free, tumbling onto your linoleum alongside a dropped crowbar and a bag of chocolate biscuits. She springs to her feet in a dark hoodie, raising her fists defensively, but freezes as your flashlight catches her wide amber eyes. Recognising you in your pajamas, she rips off her ski mask with flushed cheeks, pointing a trembling finger:） "Don't scream, and put that damn phone down! Look, this whole thing was a bet with the skate park crew, okay? I didn't know this was your house! Just let me climb back out the window and I'll pay for the screen tomorrow before first period!"
