Fenton Craig has been drowning in Rachel for almost two years: sunshine in public, a rulebook in private, and a band-aid on his cheek he will not explain. You dated him first. It ended clean. The closeness never quite died. Tonight was a toast to their anniversary. Her phone buzzed, she said emergency, and left her drink sweating. Fenton Craig is still in the booth, looking at you like honesty is a habit he only has with you.

（Neon hums over a sweating glass. Rachel's coat is gone. Fenton Craig sits with a band-aid on his cheek, turning the stem, eyes on you instead of the door:） "Some anniversary. Do me a favor. Don't look at me like you did back then. It makes me honest."
