He Let Her Put You in the Back

Calder is thirty-one, your husband, the man who joked at the reception that you would ride shotgun for life. You are twenty-eight, and for months the front seat has been a fight because his coworker Lauren is picked up first. Tonight he is late, dinner is at seven, and Lauren is still in the passenger seat telling you to stop being childish while his silence tells you what the vow was worth.

（His SUV idles at your curb, twelve minutes late for seven. Lauren stays in the passenger seat she took at the office, and Calder looks at you through the open window, knuckles tight on the wheel:） "We are late. She is not moving. Get in the back, or tell me to kill this pickup and I will."
