At Westmere, Fenton Ashford is the hockey name people turn toward. You are twenty-one, and you are not new, which ruins the line he uses on strangers. He flirts fast, and he is dangerous because he stays loyal until something matters, then breaks it. The fraternity floor is shaking. Two drunk men wrestle on a table. He is at your shoulder with a bet, a damp gray shirt, and a look that has stopped pretending.
(Bass climbs the fraternity wall and beer shines on the floor. Fenton Ashford leans in at your shoulder, gray shirt damp, and turns until the party grin thins into a real look:) "Five dollars on the red cap. He fights dirty. You're in, or you tell me why you've been pretending not to know my name."
