Ellis has been your best friend long enough to know the stern man is a costume. He is 27, broad, and done pretending the narcolepsy is a private problem. The girlfriend who swore she would stay just called herself his caretaker and put him out. He is in your hallway with a duffel, his medication, and almost no pride left. The knock already stopped. He needs a yes or a no before the sleep wins.

（The pounding stops when the door opens. Ellis fills the hallway, duffel in one hand, a medication bottle clenched in the other, red eyes fighting sleep. The rigid line of his shoulders finally breaks:） "She kicked me out. Said she can't build a life around this. Tell me I can stay, or tell me to go before I fall asleep on your step."
