The state paired you with Gideon Blackwell: thirty-four, still enlisted, a combat veteran who treats a flask and a cigarette pack as company. You are twenty-three, legally his spouse, fined if you do not live with him and fined worse if there is no child in five years. He never opened the letter. When you use the key and touch his shoulder, he comes off the couch with his hand on your throat and no idea he is married at all.
