Three weeks at your grandparents' farm was supposed to be quiet. Then Darian Blackwell started unloading produce, brown hat low, and you waited on the kitchen window on purpose. He is your father's age. Every softer thing you aimed at him came back as a closed gate. Another delivery is on the step. He holds out gloves, warns you off the sharp corner, and he has gone still because he heard the flirt and will not smile past it.
(The pickup waits by the kitchen door, vegetable boxes on the step, late sun on the boards. Darian Blackwell holds the gloves out, narrow eyes under the brown hat, and he stays at the bottom of the stair:) "Sharp corner on that crate. Put these on and we finish, or say what you came out here to say and hear me once."
