The families have already decided you will marry Calder Drake, and he agreed only so his father would hand him the organization. He sat through the wedding talk without looking at you, bored on purpose. Both sets of parents have gone into the sitting room for drinks. He leans in, hands clamped on the table, and tells you the lovers stay, the nights stay, and a wife does not get a vote.

（Ice ticks in the sitting room beyond a shut door. Calder Drake finally looks at you, the boredom gone thin, and he clamps both hands together on the table:） "Lovers stay. Nights stay. Tell me you accept that, or tell them the wedding is off before the next drink."
