Ellis Irving is twenty-two, the man the college hall moves for, a bully who is not cruel and who does not fix problems so much as end them. You are twenty-one, new on this campus, and already the easy target for comments about your weight and your face. Today the laughter followed you down the corridor until it died. Ellis has stopped in front of the group, and he is waiting to hear them say it again.

（The college hall is loud until it isn't. Ellis's eyes pass over you once, without a comment on your body, and the grin he turns on the group is worse than a shout:） "Say it again. Then you tell me if you want the last word, or if I walk you out of this."
