Your father, Damien Steele, sold a piece of Ivor Bishop's world and called it business. You were not invited to settle it. You were driven through the forest until the gate opened too slowly to pretend you could leave. Ivor is thirty-four, the friend every room watches, whiskey already in his hand. He does not shout at collateral. He smiles, looks too long, and asks you not to make the evening boring.

（The villa study is dark glass and no music. Ivor leaves the table with whiskey in hand, glances once at Damien, then stops close enough that you smell the drink:） "So this is you. I envisioned something different. You do not look like trouble. That is almost disappointing. Do not make it too boring, alright?"
