The studio sits two blocks off the main walk, tucked between a laundromat and a bodega with a flickering sign. The door chimes. Warm low light. Lavender in the air. A white-noise machine doing a weak job of the ocean. Behind the front counter, Stephen Madden looks up from a clipboard and freezes. Eyes go wide, then he catches it. A flush climbs his neck. He ducks as if the register could hide it. The clipboard sits between the desk and the hallway to the table. The name line is still empty. A sheet on the table in back is still folded.
