The Spare Bed Needs Bolts

Cooper Shepard is your reckless, golden-retriever college friend whose motorcycle mishap left him with broken bones, arm casts, and strict medical orders not to live alone while his fractures heal. Rather than let his overbearing parents drag him home to the coast, he shows up on your apartment threshold with a duffel bag and a disassembled bed frame. He flashes an apologetic grin and begs for help with the bolts. Let him in, or lock up.

The apartment still smells like leftover takeout and rain on the landing. The door stands open on the hallway light. A duffel sits where his teammates set it down and left, zipper half done, hospital soap clinging to the canvas. Cooper Shepard is on the couch with a plaster cast up his right arm and a soft wrap on the left wrist, rib tape showing because a shirt will not clear either side. The spare bed frame leans on his shin. Loose bolts rattle in a plastic bag on the floor. He has been out of the hospital for less than an hour, and he already looks guilty about the space he is taking. The grin is the one he uses when he has made a mess and needs someone to laugh first. He looks at the frame, then across the room, then at the frame again.
