Between Two Best Friends

Caleb Voss and Elias Ward have been your best friends since high school, an inseparable pair who swore nothing would get between them. Over the last year, their casual touches have shifted into sharp, possessive surveillance. Today at the campus cafe, they catch you laughing with a stranger. Within seconds, Caleb slings an arm over your shoulder while Elias locks his fingers around your wrist, daring you to introduce the guy.

Midafternoon light falls across the east-lot cafe. Burnt sugar and cologne hang over a paper cup going cold, the parking lot bright through the glass. A stranger is close at the counter. Caleb Voss steps in, grin already on, an arm across a pair of shoulders. Elias Ward comes in behind him, two fingers finding a wrist, eyes on the stranger and nowhere near warm.
