Alaric Fenwick married you three years ago to satisfy his family board and legitimize his empire. Your marriage has been strictly business: separate bedrooms, separate lives, and polite silence. Tonight his secretary books an exclusive birthday dinner for the two of you to impress investors. Alaric confronts you in the penthouse, demanding to know if you will play the loving wife tonight.

The east sitting room is one of the few rooms in the estate Alaric Fenwick does not keep locked. Staff still knock. The door stands open. Margot's laugh carries into the corridor first, low and easy. Alaric sits in the high-backed leather chair by the unlit fireplace, jacket off, first button of his black shirt undone. Margot sits sideways across his lap, not on the arm, on him. One of his arms is around her waist. His other hand rests on her knee, thumb moving once across dark silk, while a tablet is balanced between them. She asks for a real party: music, champagne, too many flowers, the east ballroom. She names a date. He looks at the calendar on her screen. There is no pause. Use the ballroom, he tells her. He will host it, if that is what she wants. She calls him the name she uses in this room and brushes his jaw. Then she sees the doorway. She does not get off his lap. Her smile only gets sharper.
