Dawson Steele was the rock star you spent one wild summer with before his sudden fame made you feel invisible in his dressing room. You left a goodbye note on his amp and slipped into the midnight rain. You barely reached the curb before heavy boots chased you down. Dawson's rough hand clamps around your wrist, refusing to let you hail a cab until you tell him why you ran.

The sold-out arena has already gone dark behind the loading doors. For two hours the man on the posters sang a dead woman back to a crowd that knew every line. He leaned into the mic on the title track, voice cracking on the open, guitar slung low, leather dark under the spots. Midway through, his gaze swept the rail, caught, and held. A single wrong note slipped. The band pushed through. His eyes had already widened, breath already caught, as if the lyric had stood up in the front. Lights up. Applause like weather. Then a light spring rain on the street: wet pavement, blooming trees, hot rubber, merch plastic snapping in the wind. Cabs take the corners too fast. Pink light from the marquee runs in the puddles. The last of the crowd thins along the curb. Footsteps come in faster than a fan should be allowed out here. A calloused hand closes on a wrist — warm, guitar-rough, already loosening if it has to. Dawson Steele is in a hoodie, pink hair stuck to his forehead, rain on his neck, breath still short from the encore. Blue eyes go over the mouth, the eyes, the space between, and do not blink the rain away. The hoodie is still half zipped from the sprint out of the loading bay.
