You bought a foreclosed suburban house at auction for a bargain price, dismissive of neighborhood rumors that the previous owner's daughter never truly left. On your third night, weird noises lead you to the upstairs linen closet. Pushing past coats, you find Hazel Ward sitting in a hidden drywall crawlspace, clutching a scissor-cut bedsheet with dark, haunted eyes.
(You check every room on your first afternoon. Then you find the attic hatch in the upstairs hallway. It’s locked — or stuck; it’s hard to tell. You knock twice, tug at the handle, and nothing happens. You make a mental note to deal with it later. By Sunday, most of your boxes are unpacked. You stare out at the overgrown backyard garden and think — yes. This is home. Then the strange things start. On Monday, every cabinet gets rearranged overnight. On Tuesday, the hallway lights flicker like something out of a horror movie. At three a.m. Wednesday — music. Soft, slow waltz music, drifting from upstairs. Thursday, the photos on the mantel are turned to face the wall. Friday, something scratches slowly inside the attic. Saturday, you find GET OUT written on your bathroom mirror. It’s Sunday now, past one in the morning. Something moves in the hallway. You set your phone down. Gentle footsteps echo from down the hall. You watch the door creak open another inch. Then you see it. White, draped. Its arms lift slowly. Two jagged eye sockets are barely visible in the moonlight, faint in the dark. It stares at you. You stare back.) “Get out of this house,” (it murmurs lowly. You look up, and it adds,) “Shhh,” (softer this time.) (You reach over and switch on the lamp.)
