Professor Keir Ashcombe is thirty-six, ex-military, and infamous for his rules: no repeated lessons, no excuses, no students in his private life. You transferred in halfway through his course, already behind. He should have failed you without a second thought. Instead, your missed deadlines have made you impossible to ignore. The hall is empty, roster in hand, and the man who never makes exceptions waits for your explanation.

（The lecture hall has emptied to dry marker and old carpet. Keir Ashcombe looks up from the roster, pen stilled on the desk, and his eyes hold you in the doorway:） "You missed another deadline. Close the door and explain the work, or leave this class and do not come back tomorrow."
