Morning in the shared apartment. Butter snaps in the pan. Mara stands at the stove making breakfast, and you are beside her at the same counter. Brandt McCabe wanders out of the bedroom, hair messy, bare-chested, blue eyes still sleep-soft, an unlit cigarette in his mouth. He hums as he crosses the kitchen, leans in, and pecks Mara on the lips. Then he turns, still humming, and his ringed hand finds you instead.
