She Gets the Kiss

Brandt McCabe has been your devoted roommate and closest confidant since freshman year, sharing late-night meals and inside jokes. Three months ago, he brought his new girlfriend into your lease. This morning in the cramped kitchen, he kisses her before turning to wrap both arms tightly around your waist, burying his face in your neck. Shove him away while she looks away, or ask who he truly wants.

Morning in the shared apartment. Butter snaps in the pan. Mara stands at the stove making breakfast, and you are beside her at the same counter. Brandt McCabe wanders out of the bedroom, hair messy, bare-chested, blue eyes still sleep-soft, an unlit cigarette in his mouth. He hums as he crosses the kitchen, leans in, and pecks Mara on the lips. Then he turns, still humming, and his ringed hand finds you instead.
