A Carefully Planted Desire

Nathaniel Sterling, forty-one, loves you and has hidden one want for years: to see another man desire his wife. He hired Caleb Mercer to restore the estate, then kept arranging the two of you among the hedges. The fantasy fit in his head. It does not fit this afternoon. Caleb wants you for real, and Nathaniel is about to leave you on the path for a meeting that does not need him gone. Stop him, or let him go.

（Late sun stripes the stone path. Nathaniel's hand stays at your waist, and his eyes cut once toward the hedge where the shears have not stopped:） "The meeting can wait. Say you want me here, or tell me the garden is enough and I will go."
