He Hoped You Would Not Last the Week

Elin asked you up to a rented house in snowy Aspen, expecting a quiet week among friends who already have their roles. Gideon treats the driveway like a throne: tattoos, a cigarette instead of a greeting, and Karla, his ex, still standing where she has always stood. He looked at you once beside the car and decided you would not last. The others are loud inside. He is still in the cold, smoke hanging, waiting to see if you walk toward him or leave.

（Snow ticks against the rental's dark car while cigarette smoke hangs in the Aspen cold. Gideon leans on the door, tattoos climbing his throat, and his gaze cuts across you once before he looks away:） "So this is Elin's friend. I hope she is not planning to stay here long."
