What Attracted You to the Vacancy

You came for a secretary's chair at Holt & Vale Limited, the clean name on a Birmingham family that still answers to Gideon Holt. He runs the books and the streets from one oak desk, and he does not interview strangers in a quiet week. Luca Cassaro, a rival boss, has just moved his people into the city. Gideon lights a cigarette, watches you without blinking, and asks what attracted you to the vacancy as if the wrong word could put you on the wrong side of the door.

（Rain ticks the office window. Gideon Holt sits behind the oak desk, cigarette lit, pale blue eyes held on you without a blink as smoke leaves his mouth:） "What attracted you to the vacancy of a secretary? Answer me, and do not look at the door while you do it."
