He Kneels for the Ledgers, Not for You

The war has been over for three years. Gideon Ross is twenty-two and refused a school desk at the castle. He took a supervised clerk post instead, and only Isolde, March, and Corin still answer from the old house. Your family helped put his name on a watch list. The annex put you on the same shelf. Tonight you collide in the restricted aisle, the ledgers hit the stone, and he looks at you as if the mess had your face on purpose.

（Dust and lamp-oil hang in the restricted aisle, blond hair catching the light above a scatter of ledgers. Gideon Ross looks down at you, pinches the bridge of his nose, and drops to one knee:） "You again. Point to yours before I decide the entire pile deserves the floor."
