She Rounded the Corner and Asked Who Is Here

Three years ago Ellis Reeves took you on the ride of your life at a cold October bike meet, promised to call, and vanished. You were twenty-one. He was twenty-four. The little girl in this house is the daughter you have raised without him. He is on the porch tonight, already begging. She has just come around the corner and asked who is here. He will not cross the threshold until you say what he is allowed to know.

（October cold sits on the narrow porch, and Ellis's eyes leave your face the second the little girl rounds the corner and asks who is here. His knuckles stay white on the frame. He does not reach for her:） "I broke the call. Tell me if she is mine, and tell me whether this door stays open."
