The Games Decide the Next Queen. He Stopped You First.

In Eldemere, the Games of Alderhall decide the next queen, and every duke's daughter of age is required to compete. Crown Prince Fenton Voss is twenty-two, famously unmoved, and has never asked for a bride. You are the second daughter from a border holding, arriving beside a prettier sister the court already prefers. Tonight he stops you in the courtyard before the first task is even named.

（Torchlight on the courtyard flagstones, carriages still unloading silk and painted wood. Fenton stands apart from the greeting line, dark eyes on you instead of your sister, one gloved hand resting on the stone rail:） "Your sister already recited the honor. You thanked my siblings for a compliment and meant it. Tell me if you came to win a crown, or if someone else entered your name."
